Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. The name has come from the lush green grass, rolling hills and many wooded areas. Killarney to the south west of the island is a typical landscape of this country where green hills fold into beautiful lakes. Much of the landscape is well preserved and as such this city is a popular tourist destination both internationally and locally. The hotels Killarney has will open the doors to this natural wonderland and have you mixing with the locals in no time at all.

The south west of Ireland is furthest west that a person can travel and still be considered to be in Europe. This fact made it too far from Rome to ever be conquered by the Romans and as such it is one of the few areas of Western Europe to have escaped the Roman influence allowing the early history of European settlement to be widely explored in the area. There are signs of human habitation in the area that date back almost 9000 years to when the original explorers the Bronze Age people arrived. There are archeological sites that show the developing of civilization in the area and include the arrival of the Celts and the adoption of the Christian religion. If you venture into one of the homely pubs and strike up a conversation with a local you might be regaled with the mythology that harks back to Tir na Nog, the land of youth that lies beneath Lough Leane.

Ireland is a small country and getting around is quite easy. There are several international airports in Dublin, Shannon and Cork. The two closest are Cork and Shannon Airports and the drive to Killarney is about 2 hours from each. There are good coach services from both airports and you can also catch a train but be aware that the trains do not serve the airports directly and one will have to go to the nearest major center to catch one. One can also get to Dublin easily by ferry from mainland Europe and the United Kingdom.

The style of the hotels Killarney has and in Kerry in general, will tend more to the traditional than the modern. Some will be located in the main centers and as such will be more homely with more emphasis on good food, hospitality and comfort. There are some hotels set in estates and these will offer a wider range of activities sometimes including horse riding, hiking and golf. The basic facilities in all the hotels will include a twenty four hour front desk, parking, disabled access, non-smoking rooms and air-conditioning for summer and winter. The rooms will mostly provide room service, laundry and ironing, babysitting and internet. Some of the additional features, depending on your choice of hotel may include spa and wellness, fitness and indoor swimming.

The best time of year to visit is from spring to autumn while the hardier traveler will find that Kerry is a county that can impress in all seasons. At this time you can really appreciate the countryside with all it has to offer. One of the main attractions is the National Park that boasts a variety of deer and other small mammals. There are several programs in the area to reintroduce some of the bird life that was lost in the 1800s and as such you can now see wild Osprey and White Tailed Sea Eagles. There are also the oldest oak and largest yew forests in Europe that make up this verdant landscape.

Ireland is known, not only for its hospitality but also for the willingness of the people to drop everything at the sign of a party. As such there are several festivals that attract international artists. One such festival is the Killarney Summerfest where there are not only international performers playing side by side with local musicians but a wide display of foods and events for all ages. There is also the Circuit of Ireland Rally that is held over the Easter holiday and the International Rally of the Lakes held in May.

Killarney is a destination for the lovers of the outdoors. There is boating on the lakes, strolling in parks, cycling in the hills and hiking over so many different trails that the local tourist board reckons that if you walked every day of the year you would not walk the same trail twice. The hospitality of the hotels Killarney has will charm you and will be the ideal base for all your outdoor pursuits.
